The Phillips Collection Celebrates Five Years of Intersections
Intersections@5 features generous gifts and recently acquired works emblematic of the museum’s mission to actively collect contemporary art.
Washington, DC—This spring, The Phillips Collection celebrates the fifth anniversary of its Intersections contemporary art series with a retrospective exhibition opening May 28. The Intersections series, which has showcased the work of 21 living artists from the US and abroad, will be highlighted in Intersections@5, a presentation of the acquired artworks by these participating artists that were either part of past projects or reminiscent of them. A celebration of the Phillips’s mission to actively collect and display contemporary art, the anniversary exhibition will remain on view through October 25, 2015.
Inaugurated in 2009 and led by Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Vesela Sretenović, the Phillips’s Intersections series has invited 10 men and 11 women from the US and abroad to engage with the museum’s collection and architecture. The artists have created diverse projects—both aesthetically and conceptually—and employed various media and approaches from wall-drawing, rubber-painting, bicycle spoke sculpture, and digital photography to video projection and yarn installation. Featured artists include A. Balasubramaniam (India), Lee Boroson (US), Sandra Cinto (Brazil), Jae Ko (Korea-US), Linn Myers (US), Bernardi Roig (Spain), John F. Simon, Jr. (US), and Xavier Veilhan (France), among others.
In addition to celebrating the museum’sIntersections series, this anniversary exhibition illuminates the Phillips’s engagement with and patronage of the finest contemporary artists working today. Intersections@5 is emblematic of founder Duncan Phillips’s vision of his museum as an “experiment station” and his dedication to the art of the times.
“This thoughtfully assembled exhibition honors past and present Intersections artists who have engaged tradition in innovative, myriad ways,”
“Intersections@5 is truly an homage to Duncan Phillips’s passion for collecting and experimentation, showcasing how the museum embraces the legacy of Modern art and new, risk-taking artistic practices to build a carefully crafted, in-depth collection.”
To accompany the exhibition’s May 28 opening, the Phillips will host a small reception and an artists’ perspective, during which some of the Intersections artists will share insight on their projects and works that have entered the museum’s permanent collection. Tickets are available atwww.phillipscollection.org/events
An illustrated Intersections@5 catalogue is planned for fall 2015.
INTERSECTIONS AT THE PHILLIPS
Intersections is a series of contemporary art projects that
explores, as the title suggests, the intriguing intersections
between old and new traditions, modern and contemporary art practices, and museum spaces and artistic interventions. The projects either engage with the permanent collection or diverse spaces in the museum; and many also riff on the nontraditional nature of the museum’s galleries, sometimes activating spaces that are not typical exhibition areas with art produced specifically for those locations.
Videos of artists installing their work are available at www.phillipscollection.org/multimedia
Intersections is supported by Phillips International Collectors Forum members.
