Event Details
The Conversations with Artists series provides an opportunity for the DC community and University of Maryland students to hear from leading and emerging artists in an informal setting. STEPHEN HAYES is a mixed media sculptor and creator whose work references socio-cultural race dynamics rooted in historical references. Originally from Durham, North Carolina, Hayes completed his MFA at the Savannah College of Art and Design and has taught at Georgia State University. His work seeks to change societal perceptions of Black identity and otherness through the vulnerability of sharing experiences and the catharsis of collective realizations. Hayes was an Arts Lab fellow at Halcyon Arts Lab in 2017–2018. At the intersection of art and social change, this nine-month residential fellowship is designed to provide support and resources to emerging artists working on projects which address issues of social justice, civic engagement, and community building. Arts Lab fellows strive to hone their practices and grow as leaders in their respective fields.
Stephen Hayes will be joined in conversation with KAREN LEMMEY, Curator of Sculpture, Smithsonian American Art Museum.
