Hands-on with Painting with Paper
with Megan Coyle
Join us for a hands-on workshop led by Megan Coyle where participants are invited to take a moment to leave the city and explore the landscapes of the country. We will experiment with how the different colors and textures of nature can translate to found colors and textures in magazines. Through contemplating the hues of mountains and fields, landscape collage can become more abstract.
No experience necessary. All materials provided.
About Megan Coyle
“For as long as I can remember making art, I have been drawn to illustrating scenes of everyday life. I’m intrigued by how much detail exists in the environment around us. We are surrounded by interesting images that tell their own story with color, lighting, and composition.
I call my style “painting with paper”—a collage technique whereby I re-create the look and feel of a painting through the manipulation of magazine strips. Utilizing this method allows me to create artwork that captures the essence of a painting, but broadens my palette to include textures, patterns, and fragments of photographs from magazines. Collage is my preferred medium because of its versatility. I can build up an image’s surface by layering different shapes of paper and I can peel away pieces to let previous layers shine through. By intricately layering and cutting paper, I can focus on the details of the subjects I collage. While depicting landscapes, I find myself breaking down the details I see into fragments—piecing together my collages bit by bit, occasionally stepping back to see the work in its entirety.”
