Reflecting on the intimacy of the Phillips’s Music Room and the current Nordic Impressions Exhibition, Måwe will perform “Miniatures, Chopin, and Nordic Impressions,” a program of diverse solo piano works that plays with unusual pairings. The program begins with the intriguing juxtaposition of Rameau with Philip Glass, before turning to Chopin’s diverse pianisitc idiom. About the Artist
Swedish pianist, Henrik Måwe, is a shining star on the Scandinavian piano scene, performing regularly as a soloist and recording artist. After his debut with the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2008, he has performed extensively in Scandinavian concert halls as a concerto soloist and recitalist. He regularly collaborates with the elite of Swedish musicians including clarinetist Martin Fröst and contralto Anna Larsson.
Highlights in the 2018/2019 season will be a US tour with concerts at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and the Lincoln Center in New York, and several solo performances with Swedish orchestras. In the spring of 2017, Måwe presented Anders Hillborg’s piano concerto in Västerås and played in Berwaldhallen together with violinist Christian Svarfvar, and made the first performance of Chopin—a play, a touring chamber play based on Chopin’s final year, with Måwe performing as an actor as well as pianist. In 2016 he made his debut with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Shostakovich’s first piano concert.
Måwe received his main education at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki and the Kungl Music School in Stockholm where his most important mentor was Staffan Scheja. During his studies, he worked with some of the best pianists and educators in the world, including Dominique Merlet, Dmitri Bashkirov, John O’Conor, and Olli Mustonen, and participated in a number of international piano competitions and was awarded in most top positions.
In 2014, Måwe released the duo album Sonic Philosophy: Color and Affect along with violinist Hugo Ticciati, which received brilliant reviews in both BBC Music Magazine and Gramophone. Måwe has recorded for the BIS, Rubicon, Orchid, and X5 labels.
