Turner Elementary School and Washington School for Girls 2017-2018 School Year
Phillips@THEARC Exhibition
The 2017–2018 Art Links to Learning: Museum-in-Residence program at Turner Elementary School and Washington School for Girls culminates in an exhibition showcasing arts-integrated works created by students in grades K-8.
About the Exhibition
Currently in the second year of partnership with Turner Elementary School and the first year of partnership with the Washington School for Girls (WSG), the Museum-in-Residence program includes professional development workshops and one-on-one arts-integration coaching for teachers, in-classroom workshops led by Phillips Educators, and a visit to the museum.
In the classroom and at the Phillips, over 160 Turner students in second, third, and fourth grades, as well as a medical and education support class, explored subjects such as math, science, and English language arts through artwork by Alma Thomas, Horace Pippin, McArthur Binion. In the classroom and at the Phillips, over 60 WSG second, third, fifth, and eighth grade classes participated in the program. Students delved into classroom subjects such as math and social studies by looking at artwork by Jacob Lawrence, Paul Klee, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Vincent Van Gogh.
Art Links to Learning is The Phillips Collection’s portfolio of educational programs for District of Columbia Public and Public Charter Schools (DCPS and DCPCS). To meet our community’s need for more productive teaching and learning, the Phillips has developed innovative methods that have been shown to enhance teaching and to increase student engagement and understanding. Art Links programs weave visual arts education with other core subject areas such as English/language arts, social studies, and science, while helping students develop 21st-century skills, including critical thinking and problem solving.
