Young Artists Exhibition

The Inspired Teaching Public Charter School currently serves 420 students from preschool through 8th grade. Now in its sixth year of partnership with the Inspired Teaching School, the Museum-in-Residence program includes pre- and post-museum visit in-classroom workshops led by Phillips Educators and ongoing arts-integration coaching for teachers. Throughout the 2016–2017 school year, students connected works of art in the museum’s collection to classroom themes such as “freedom,” “the marketplace,” and “migration and immigration.” 

The school was founded in 2011 by the Center for Inspired Teaching—a DC-based educational organization that has served teachers and students since 1995 with the goal of ensuring that teachers make the most of children’s innate desire to learn. At the Inspired Teaching School, students learn through an academically challenging, standards-based curriculum that supports and builds their intellect, imagination, and integrity. Master teachers and teaching residents work together to ensure that students achieve their potential as accomplished learners, thoughtful citizens, and imaginative and inquisitive problem solvers through a demanding, inquiry-based curriculum.

Art Links to Learning is The Phillips Collection’s portfolio of educational programs for District of Columbia Public and Public Charter Schools (DCPS and DCPCS). To meet our community’s need for more productive teaching and learning, the Phillips has developed innovative methods that have been shown to increase student engagement and understanding and enhance teaching. Art Links programs weave visual arts education with other core subject areas such as language arts, social studies, and science, while helping students develop 21st-century skills, which include critical thinking and problem solving.

The creative, hands-on Art Links approach reflects the spirit of inquiry, experimentation, and intimacy advocated by museum founder Duncan Phillips. The program has been recognized for its success by local and national organizations, including the National Art Education Association and the American Alliance of Museums. Art Links takes a whole school approach and is designed to adapt to the needs of individual schools, educators, and learners.
