About the Exhibition
As the son of famed photographer Edward Weston, Brett Weston developed an understanding of form and composition at an early age. Despite his prolific and accomplished body of work, however, his achievements were overshadowed by those of his father. Brett Weston: Out of the Shadow, which features more than 100 of his photographs from the 1920s through the 1980s, is the first major Brett Weston exhibition in 30 years and the first retrospective exhibition of his work ever presented in Washington, DC.
The exhibition focuses attention on Brett Weston’s abstract black-and-white photographs of landscapes, shapes and textures, and architectural elements. His pioneering works captured the intricacies and rhythms of form, light, and shadow, while avoiding photographic techniques such as contrived lighting, staging, or other manipulation. The exhibition also incorporates many of the 151 Brett Weston photographs which the Phillips recently received from the Brett Weston Archive of the Christian K. Keesee Collection.
Brett Weston: Out of the Shadows was co-organized by The Phillips Collection and the Oklahoma City Museum of Art.
