A Mural for the Community
Education & Community Engagement
In an effort to experiment with new ways to interact with schools and local artists, the Phillips education team collaborated with Janney Elementary School students to create a mural at their school.
How can you use art to express and celebrate the core values of our community?
In the fall of 2024, third grade students (graduating class of 2027) at Janney Elementary School answered this question by making a mural. Through The Phillips Collection’s Art Links School Partnership Program, Janney students collaborated with local artist Rose Jaffe and Phillips educators to design a vibrant mural at the school, painted by the students and their families. The students spent three months connecting art with community, creating a lasting tribute to their shared values and creativity.
This project began with a visit to The Phillips Collection, where students explored the role of symbols in art. Inspired, they sketched designs that celebrate their community. Rose Jaffe combined their ideas into a single mural design, which was brought to life during a community painting day on November 23, 2024.
It was a joy to work with the entire Janney community of parents, administrators, and teachers. A teacher at Janney shared: “This project has truly been a highlight of my time with my students. It was magical to see their ideas and creativity blossom into something beautiful and meaningful. This mural is more than just a piece of art; it stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the transformative impact of partnerships like ours. Thank you for gifting our school community with this extraordinary creation and for creating a moment our students and families will cherish forever.”
