Fall 2024 update from Vradenburg Director & CEO Jonathan P. Binstock
As I approach two years in the role of Vradenburg Director & CEO, I find myself more in awe than ever of the work The Phillips Collection is doing to bring art and people together. A major project we recently unveiled is the reimagined Welcome Gallery, an inviting space that introduces visitors to the pioneering spirit and vision of our founders, Duncan and Marjorie Phillips. This redesigned area serves as a gateway to understanding our unique approach to collecting and exhibiting art, providing guests with tools to confidently explore our diverse collection.
Our new Welcome Gallery is part of a broader strategic plan that you will hear more about soon. The heart of the strategic plan is exemplified in our exhibition Breaking It Down: Conversations from the Vault, which celebrates the Phillips’s longstanding commitment to supporting living artists. This exhibition not only honors our rich legacy but also looks forward, highlighting our growing collection of contemporary innovators.
Also on view is William Gropper: Artists of the People, a groundbreaking and profound exploration of art and activism. It is an exhibition that speaks to our institution’s core values of social justice, democracy, and the power of art to challenge and inspire. Our community galleries are showcasing works from our Creative Aging program and the new Reframing Care initiative. At Phillips@THEARC, we are proud to display works by our 2023 CARD Fellows, whose collaborative spirit embodies our mission of fostering artistic dialogue. I hope you can join us for a workshop at THEARC!
Our Sunday Concerts continue to be a cornerstone of our programming, just as attending them remains a highlight of my time as Director. The music program is now under the expert guidance and care of our new Director of Music, Jenny Lin. I am pleased to announce that the team is growing in other departments, too! This month we welcome Lauren Sharrock as our new Director of Membership, who will keep you up to date on our exclusive member offerings. We also welcome Bradley Freedman to the role of Chief Operating Officer; Bradley’s extensive operational experience will equip us to better serve our patrons and guests. Jenny, Lauren, and Bradley—we are grateful to have you.
I am delighted to announce a new member benefit: an exclusive members-only hour every Sunday from 10–11 am. This special hour creates space for an intimate engagement with the collection and the opportunity to connect with your fellow Phillips members!
The Phillips carries on as a space for discovery, learning, and joy. We are committed to enriching how we experience and interact with art, always with an eye towards fostering meaningful connections with you. And it is with heartfelt joy that I thank you for your commitment to our beloved museum.
As always, I look forward to spending time with you in the galleries!
