Katie Cushman is the art teacher at Peabody Early Childhood Center. She teaches art to three-, four- and five-year-olds by introducing many different art materials and concepts through step-by-step guided discovery. Because Peabody is an arts-integration school, Katie's role is vital to the school's educational philosophy, which extends art into all subjects. Her goals are to instill joy, satisfaction, and confidence in her young artists through the art-making process and for them to feel pride in what they have created. Katie has her BA in studio art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a graphic designer for many years before volunteering in the classroom and then becoming a substitute teacher, primarily for art teachers. In 2007, she received her art education certification at the University of the District of Columbia and became a full-time teacher at Peabody.
