Carol Barker is the librarian at Turquoise Trail Elementary Charter School. She received a BA in English and a secondary teaching certification in language arts from the University of Texas at Austin. She has a master's degree in liberal education from St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and is certified through New Mexico Public Schools to teach library-media skills and language arts. Carol believes that incorporating the visual arts into her lessons allows for greater understanding of the content being studied: "Paintings, music, and writing can tell us so much about a time. We ask our children to study history, but give them very little in the way of visual images to interpret what was going on. I love using great works of art in the classroom, not only for exposing the students to a great artist, but as a way of opening the door to greater interpretations and discussions."
