Gallery talks are presented by members of the museum's education, curatorial, and research staff, as well as guest lecturers (see schedule below). Please note: Gallery talks may require a ticket for the special exhibition for that day or a separate admission fee.

Spotlight Tours are offered Tuesdays–Fridays at noon. A 15-minute focus on one artwork in the museum.

Introductory tours of the museum are offered every Saturday at noon. Unreserved; included in museum admission. Parlour, Main House.

Introductory tours of the current special exhibition are offered every Sunday at noon. Unreserved; included in museum admission.

Sunday Concerts at 4 p.m., October through May. Unreserved; early arrival is recommended. Included in the price of admission. Music Room.

Phillips after 5— combines live jazz, gallery talks, superb modern art, and a cash bar for a memorable evening on the first Thursday of every month from 5 to 8:30 pm. Other elements, such as films and workshops, are often included as well; included in museum admission.

Bob Tublin first picked up a guitar as an eight-year old and has worked in the DC area for 20 years as a jazz guitarist. Tonight, Tublin will peform with an upright bass, drums and saxophone.

SHORT FILM:
The Making of the Migration Series
Auditorium, 5:30 pm – 8:00 pm(shown every half hour)
Explore Jacob Lawrence’s The Migration Series, a masterpiece of narrative painting that depicts the great 20th-century exodus of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North. Lawrence will reveal his artistic process and describe the influence of the Harlem Renaissance on his art. 20 minutes, 1993.

Sourcework—Understanding Diebenkorn’s Influences
Learn how the playfulness of the comic strip Krazy Kat and the flat, colorful spaces of Paul Cézanne and Henri Matisse inspired Richard Diebenkorn. Explore how he fused these influences while living and painting in New Mexico, 1950–52.
Included in museum admission.

6 & 7 p.m. Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party immortalizes a leisurely afternoon in the countryside near Paris. This talk explores The Phillips Collection’s best-known painting as a celebration of light, color, and modern life.

LECTURE

In 1942 New York art dealer Edith Halpert masterminded the sale of Lawrence's 60-panel The Migration Series between The Phillips Collection and The Museum of Modern Art. Art historian Dr. Diane Tepfer, author of Edith Gregor Halpert and the Downtown Gallery will discuss the circumstances leading to the sale and Lawrence's later response. Free; donations appreciated.
